A seed phrase is a list of 12 or 24 common words that backs up your entire crypto wallet, and whoever holds those words controls every coin in it.
Other names: recovery phrase, mnemonic, backup phrase. That list controls the wallet itself. Every private key and address can be rebuilt from those words on any compatible app. So the phrase is the money.
Where the words come from: BIP-39
BIP-39 defines how a computer turns random data into a readable word list: generate 128 to 256 bits of entropy, add a SHA-256 checksum, split into 11-bit chunks, and map each to one of exactly 2048 words. The words are then run through PBKDF2 (2048 hashes) to produce a 512-bit seed.
12 words or 24 words?
12 words encode 128 bits of entropy; 24 encode 256. Both are uncrackable by guessing (128 bits is already beyond any computer). 24 exists for extra margin and hardware-wallet standardization. The real risk is human: you lose the paper, or someone finds it.
The optional 25th word
BIP-39 lets you add a passphrase on top. Every different passphrase produces a completely different wallet from the same words. Forget it and your funds are gone.
How the phrase controls all your keys
BIP-39 makes the seed, BIP-32 generates a master key and a tree of child keys, BIP-44 standardizes the layout. It's deterministic: the same seed always regenerates the same keys, which is why typing your words into a new wallet restores everything.
How to store your seed phrase
Never store it digitally (no photos, cloud, screenshots). Prefer metal over paper (fire/water resistant); keep at least two copies in two locations. Use a hardware wallet. Never share it, real support never asks.
