Ripple gets a bank charter, a Moody's rating and Robinhood

On October 26, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency gave Ripple final approval to open Ripple National Trust Bank. Conditional approval came in December 2025. The bank will hold the reserves behind RLUSD, act as collateral trustee for holders and offer custody for digital assets. It won't take deposits or make loans.

On October 27, Moody's gave RLUSD an A2 long-term rating and a P-1 short-term rating. Both are investment grade, and P-1 is Moody's highest short-term grade. Moody's pointed to what backs it: mostly short-term US Treasuries and cash, held largely at BNY, with a target of $1.03 in reserves for every $1 of RLUSD. BNY also added XRP and RLUSD to its own institutional custody platform that week.

The same day, as Ripple's Swell conference opened in New York, Robinhood announced a broad partnership with Ripple. RLUSD is already live on Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp by Robinhood, and it's expected inside the main Robinhood app before the end of the year. Robinhood has 28.6 million funded customers. It will also settle institutional payments in RLUSD on the XRP Ledger and run parts of its own treasury on Ripple's software.

All three landed in the same week.

    Bitcoin breaks below $80,000

Bitcoin reached $84,800 early last week, then fell five days in a row and touched $79,200 over the weekend. By Tuesday evening it was back near $81,000.

The selling started outside crypto. Tech stocks dropped hard on October 22, with Nvidia down 8% and Meta down 9% for the week. Spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $635.6 million that same day, their worst day of October, then another $137.9 million on Friday.

Buyers came back this week. The funds took in $110.3 million on Monday, all of it into BlackRock's IBIT, and $176 million on Tuesday.

Protect your account: 2FA, screen-sharing and fake support

Scams aimed at crypto holders are getting more convincing. Please take two minutes with this one.

The most common scam right now doesn't break two-factor authentication (2FA) at all. Someone poses as support from a trusted institution, gets you on a video call, and asks you to share your screen or install a remote-access app "to fix your account." Once they control your computer, they can see your codes, your saved files and your email.

Your authenticator app makes a new six-digit code every 30 seconds from one secret key, the one hidden inside the QR code you scan at setup. Anyone with a copy of that key can generate the same codes on any device. Your phone isn't what protects you. The key is.

    • Never give anyone remote access to your computer. No real exchange or lender needs to control your screen. If someone asks, end the call.

    • Never share your screen with someone who contacts you about your account. Screen-sharing lets a scammer read codes and keys as they appear.

    • Don't save the setup QR code or key. No screenshots, no emailing it to yourself, no notes app. If your email or computer is ever compromised, that copy goes with it.

    • Be careful with "Export codes" in Google Authenticator. It packs every account into one QR code. If you send it to your computer or inbox as a backup, whoever gets in there gets your 2FA too.

    • Check before you click. Type lantern.finance into your browser yourself instead of following a link, and only contact us through the details on our website. Scammers copy logos, names and email styles.

    • We'll never ask for your 2FA code or setup key. If an email from you looks unusual, we'll call you to confirm it's really you before acting on it.

If you have any questions, or anything feels off, reach out to our support team at [email protected] or text us at (415) 365-0100.

Bitcoin had a rough week. But Ripple now has a federal bank charter and an investment-grade rating on RLUSD, and one of the biggest trading apps in the US is bringing it to its customers. If you'd rather not sell into a weak market, you can borrow against what you hold instead.

Borrow, trade and manage your crypto on one platform, with loans from 8%, 0% liquidation fees, and 72 hours to respond to a margin call.
